Question 7: Upon entering a hold'em game as a new player, are you better off "posting" in the big blind position or waiting until the button passes and you post behind the button?
A: If an online Casino allows you to come in and post one big blind just behind the button, then I suggest that you are much better off doing that.
Firstly, because you would have invested only $15 as blind money instead of $25 including both small and big blinds.
Secondly, if you had played those blind hands, then you would be playing them out of position.
Thirdly, by posting a blind just behind the button, you are in an excellent position to raise, giving you a good chance to buy a button by forcing the button to decide if he wants to call two bets cold (or raise) in order to play, and also letting you put pressure on the two regular blinds. These players in the blind may suspect that you are putting a power play on them. Even if they do suspect that, they also know that you will hold position on them for the whole hand, so you will get them to fold a fair amount, and if they do come in, you do have position on them.
There are just two positive factors associated with this. Firstly, it enables you to disguise as an amateur in the online poker game. And secondly, you do get to play the button. But I don't think these minor advantages compensate for the problem of two hands played out of position and the bonus of one easy-to-raise hand in favorable position.
Thus, I recommend you to wait and post behind the button.
